Fix it with Food
From ReThinkWiki
WE FINALLY FINALLY FINISHED OUR GAME
Thanks to everyone who helped us get to where we are now (Jeff, Itay, and Brian)
Here is our game...ENJOY!!!!!!
Note If you see some of the objects flicker, that means it may not work as well as we want it to. We are trying to figure out why it does that on the internet. Perhaps the file may be too big but I don't know :(
1. Team Introduction
On our team working on the game are Rebecca Distler , Leslie Hiciano, Leticia Perez and Emily Wolf. Rebecca does a lot of the research for the questions and answers. She is also is the one who puts everything we have together on one file. Leslie works on all the intro scenes that come before each question. Leticia is making sure that the page is updated and all the questions filled in. Rebecca, Emily and Leticia work on making the different levels.
All four of us went to Columbia Prep here in New York - Rebecca, Leticia and Emily just graduated while Leslie is entering her junior year. None of us have ever worked with flash before, although we all have some level of experience using computers for powerpoint presentations and other various school projects.
We've been following the HLife Course Schedule as close as possible, completing each task as it is taught and carried out with the Rethinkers in New Orleans.
2. Learning about Games
Before we started making our game, we looked at other games to get inspiration and to look at games beyond a player.
Games We Reviewed
Visit our projects pages for our specific reviews:
Here are the links to the games we played and reviewed:
Jimmy vs The Splurge Game
Mission Nutrition Game
These links can also be found in the Learning Game Design topic found under the game design topics on the sidebar of the HLife wiki. Writing game reviews was one of the first assignments we were given, before we began to imagine and plan our game, and is the first step in developing a game. Writing the reviews allowed us to get a sense of what we wanted to learn from our game, how we wanted to interact with it and how we wanted to design it.

4. Fix It With Food!
GAME PITCH Version 1.0
- Audience Kids of all ages with an interest in learning about healthier food choices!
- Game Play The player sees through the eyes of a teenager. They are in a messy room and are trying to navigate themselves through it. They will come to different obstacles in this maze of a room. At each obstacle they will pick something up that will present a problem to them--problems characteristic to teenagers. For example, they'll come across a printed paper on the floor. When they pick it up, it'll be an essay with an F on it. The problem will be you have to rewrite this essay for tomorrow in order to save your grades. You're probably going to have to pull an all nighter--what should you eat? Two choices will come up and the player will have to choose the smarter one. If they choose the right one they get to go on, and if they choose the wrong choice three times in a row then they get a "stomach ache" and have to go to the doctors office...The goal of the player is to make it to the weekend. (5 or ten phases/questions; 1 or 2 questions per day)
- Fun Factor What is fun for the player is navigating through the room maze and answering questions that relate to decisions the player themselves may have to make.
- Smart Factor The player learns healthier food choices that won't lead to stomach aches at the end of the week. The player will probably make these decisions at one time or another also.
- Style Factor The game will look like a room, and a messy one at that. There will be funky sounds to keep the game fun to play.
- Originality Factor Because of the teenager factor that kids can once again relate to.
GAME PITCH Version 2.0
- Audience
Originally when we were planning our game, we had intended our game to be for children of all ages. However, as we did more and more research, the questions became a little too hard for kids in the elementary school levels. So now we have decided that our game is more of middle schoolers and older.
- Game Play
The basic purpose of our game is to answer the question presented to the player correctly. First, the player is shown a few snapshots of a room or location that they may come in contact with. Then a question appears. Next, the player must navigate through the level and choose the correct one of the three food choices available. They must watch out for unhealthy snacks and moving objects along the way. If they reach the correct food, will move on to the next level. However, if they reach the wrong food or if they hit an unhealthy snack or moving object, they will have to start again.
- Fun Factor
Our game incorporates many "fun" aspects of other games because it is more than just clicking on the right answer. They have to test their video game skills and navigate through obstacles to reach a final destination similar to many games kids like to play.
- Smart Factor
Not only are kids having fun going through each level, but their goal is to answer the question about food correctly. They are thinking about the answer as they play the level and once they get it right, there is a little blurb explaining to them why it is the correct answer.
- Style Factor
In terms of graphics, all our images and symbols were drawn on flash and although we aren't exactly artists, we did a pretty good job at making our food and objects look like the real thing. Our stages are all set up to be a room and we change things in the level to remind the player what room they are in. For instance, in the living there are TVs and couches and in the school there are desks and pencils.
- Originality Factor
Although we looked at games such as Jimmy vs the Splurge and Mission Nutrition to get ideas, we made sure to think of our own way to incorporate learning into a fun game. Before we started making our game, we decided that just asking question is not effective because not only would they not know the answer, but the players would have no motivation to continue. Just having a level without a question is again not effective, because the player would not be thinking about the right food choices and would simply focus on getting through the level. We decided on a great combination of the two options and realized that this would be the absolute best way to get kids to think about the right food choices but also to keep them engaged long enough so that they know what the right foods are. We also tried to look for random facts about food so that kids would learn new things about the food they eat instead of just repeat things they already know.
Game Development Plan
Here are a few of the topics that we will use to make our game:
- Intro to Actionscript--for overall game making purposes
- Learning from Others--to be able to copy code from borrowed Flash files, or learn from other flash files with appropriate coding
- Programming Practices--for overall game making purposes
- Collision Detection--to keep character from leaving screen, to keep character from running through obstacles without stopping, to make any sort of cause and effect reacting when something hits something else
- Platforms--for our different game levels
- Animating Character Appearance--to make the character move more realistically
- Coding Character Movement--character movement
- Running, Jumping, and more--enhancing character movement so that character can interact appropriately with each oorresponding game level

| NOTES:
This was Rebecca's first attempt at making a title screen. All of the objects were on one layer, and animation was achieved through painful frame by frame animation, where in each keyframe, all objects had to be moved slightly to achieve the effect of animation. Notice how much choppier it appears than version 2.0 of the title page, and this is because of the frame by frame animation. This title page was created without looking at any tutorials, and it is interesting that frame by frame animation is the first thing we want to do when we start Flash programming, even though it is much harder to do. | NOTES
This was Rebecca's second attempt at making a title screen. In this version, every object - including each individual word - was put on a separate layer, as demonstrated in one of the first HLife tutorials on Flash. This version incorporates the use of buttons, motion tweens and motion guides, all learned by viewing HLife tutorials and created as a response to learning from these tutorials. Motion guides were learned last, and provided a lot more freedom - so instead of having the food just get pushed to a corner, they could individually dance and circle off the screen on their own accord. Motion guides also allowed the text to shrink, as it does when it moves to the top of the yellow, and it allowed the carrot to circle to the end of the yellow and bring up the two buttons. The buttons themselves were originally going to be brought in using motion tweens alone, but the motion guides ended up being easier, since the rest of title page was created using them. However, it was necessary to learn about motion tweens before motion guides. Notice how much more complicated and professional NOT using frame by frame animation looks - you are given a lot more freedom and can create better animations. Here is a list of the tutorials used, in the order in which they were viewed to create this title scene:

5. OTHER FLASH FILES
Wrong Answer Screens
Here are the wrong answer screens - they will appear whenever a player picks the wrong answer. In this game, there are two types of wrong answer/wrong action screens. The first is what appears when you hit a "bad" food (i.e candy, ice cream, etc.). That screen looks like this:
When you hit bad food... To see how we did it, here is the Flash file -->> Image:Appetite.fla Tutorials we used: Buttons Tutorial
The other type of wrong action screen is the wrong answer screen. Each level has three potential answers - all of which are healthy foods, but only one of which answers the question posted at the beginning of each level. The wrong answer screens are intended to not only give further information on healthy food, but also to encourage learning in all aspects of our game. Here are some of these screens, organized by the level in which they will appear.

RESEARCH
When we came up with the idea for Fix It With Food, we knew we wanted a game where kids would not only learn the difference between good and bad foods but what about good foods made them good. What is in them? Why eat them? These were the questions we had in mind when designing the game questions and answers. How does ginger affect nausea? How do almonds protect against sunburn? In making this game, we learned a lot about food, and had a lot of extra research to do.
Below are links to the articles - ranging from dietician websites to medical journals - that we used to learn about the foods we incorporated into our game.

Just wanted to announce that Leslie and I are basically done with our game. But since I worked from the beginning and she started at the end, we have to put the two files together. We just tried but it's a lot harder than it sounds. Also, I just remembered that we have some kinks to clear out, such as making it so that our little guy can't leave the screen and making the obstacles (boxes, walls, etc) solid so that little guy cannot walk through them, and making some of the levels jumping levels instead of walking levels. So we're not completely done but pretty close! --Leticia 22:14, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
Here's another update on our game. The reason we have not been able to put up our game just yet is because Leslie and I ran into some trouble. Three of our levels were jumping levels and two out of the three have moving platforms. We figure out how to make him land on the stationary platforms but we are having tons and tons of problems trying to figure out how to make our game character ride with the moving platforms. I just spent all of today looking for tutorials online and trying out a couple of things. Hopefully is will be done on Monday when both Leslie and I are back in the office. --Leticia 22:14, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
