Design Analysis
I decided to explore the games and sims with my 9 year old son, Ptah-Malik. The following analysis includes primarily his insights as a player!
Explore Gravity - Science Sim
This was a fun user-friendly game because it is situated as an experiment. The player actually becomes Galileo to reenact his gravity experiment. We liked this game because it is easy to understand how to maneuver around to actually play; it clearly illustrates how the function of gravity (with and without atmospheric resistance)works. The producer's notes were helpful with providing context for the scientific concept the simulation illustrates as well as giving a description of what the player does during the game experience. One of the things essential to the functionality of these simulation is "clicking and dragging." I want to learn how to do this! Based on what I do know, this is a function of many games and though simple I am certain there is some science and programming behind it!
Cartoon Builder
This was my son's favorite (so far). This is a very easy to play game that gives the player an opportunity to explore their creative sensibility. Very simple maneuvering, lots of versatility in terms of the different animation schemes you can create. Ptah-Malik spent a lot of time with this game experimenting with different iterations of animations. This demonstrates the high interactivity which keeps the player engaged. I suppose this is a good quality/characteristic to have a for a game!
